Big Oyster Brewery is entering its ninth year in business at its original Lewes location on Kings Highway. Somehow, it feels like the party is just getting started.
Big Oyster is known for its fresh seafood and cold craft beer brewed in-house. You can’t go wrong with a Hammerhead, although lately I’ve been opting for Solar Power, its award-winning Belgian wit.
It’s a choice spot for families, where parents can unwind with an adult beverage while the kiddos burn off some energy on the backyard playground. There’s always something going on, from special events to frequent live music, and this weekend is no different.
On Sunday, Aug. 16, Big Oyster will host its fourth annual Shuck Cancer 5K, a race that brings the community together to support those courageously facing cancer.
As always, the Shuck Cancer 5K will raise funds for Fighting Pretty, a nonprofit whose mission is to help women battling cancer feel strong and beautiful during and after treatment. Since 2013, Fighting Pretty has helped more than 50,000 women in all 50 states and 39 countries.
We can all raise a glass to that.
“Now in its fourth year, the Shuck Cancer 5K has become a meaningful tradition, bringing together runners, walkers, local businesses, cancer survivors, families and supporters from across Delmarva to make a difference one step at a time,” said Mandee Boucher, director of marketing for Fins Hospitality Group.
The race starts at 8 a.m. From Big Oyster, runners will head down Kings Highway toward downtown Lewes. The scenic out-and-back course finishes right at the brewpub.
Looking to chase a PR or bring home some hardware? Multiple age groups will be recognized, with awards up for grabs, so lace up your fastest shoes.
Of course, crossing the finish line is only half the fun. Be sure to stick around for the after-party. Racers receive a complimentary post-race beer. After all, hydration is key. Snacks and $7 crushes will also be available, with Big Oyster’s full menu offered beginning at 11 a.m.
There will also be a raffle featuring all kinds of goodies, and members of the Fighting Pretty team will be there to join the celebration.
