Dogfish Head is having itself a summer. With a heavy rotation of epic events, live music, beer releases and near-constant collaborations, you can guarantee you’re in for a good time when you step foot in the door.
Last week was no different.
Dogfish Head joined forces with Middle Aged Dad Jam Band to release Middle Aged Dad Beer on July 22. The beer itself is an easy-drinkin’ 4.5% ABV wheat ale brewed with figs, lime peels and spruce tips. This one is light, refreshing and one you’re going to keep coming back to for another sip. It’s available on draft and in 4-packs while supplies last.
And in true Dogfish fashion, the first 75 customers to purchase a 4-pack of the beer received a pair of 2.5x-strength reading glasses attached with good ol’ fashioned duct tape. After all, what middle-aged dad doesn’t require an extra set of readers?
It dropped in unison with Middle Aged Dad Jam Band’s first stop of its summer tour, a live show at Brewings & Eats. Covering the “best songs of all time” with a little comedy mixed in, the band is led by Ken Marino, David Wain and Craig Wedren, also known as the crew that brought us the cult classic “Wet Hot American Summer” some 25 years ago.
You could argue the concept behind the collaboration started even earlier. Ken Marino and Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head founder and brewer, were roommates in college. The group fraternized its way around New York City, becoming lifelong friends in the process.
“We all became chums together in New York City when Ken was my roommate, and they were all present when I shared my first batch of homebrew,” says Calagione. “To be making this beer with them feels like one of those special, full-circle moments.”
The feeling was mutual with the members of Middle Aged Dad Jam Band.
“Dave and I have been lucky enough to spend decades creating things with people we genuinely love,” says Marino. “Sam has always been one of those people, so this beer is really a celebration of what happens when long friendships keep finding new ways to create together. Cheers to friendship … and beer.”
From Rehoboth, the band is bouncing its way up the East Coast, with stops in Long Island, New York City, Rhode Island and Maine. The tour wraps up in August at Griffith Park in Los Angeles with a special 25th anniversary reunion of Wet Hot American Summer.
