It’s the summer of Big Oyster Brewery. If you’re a frequent reader, craft beer enthusiast, golf guru, or all of the above, you’ll recall that Big Oyster opened a new brewpub earlier this summer in Milford at the Southern Delaware Golf Club. Things are in full swing at the new location… the putts are dropping and the beer is flowing. If you haven’t been yet, I recommend adding it to your list. While this is going on to the north, Big Oyster is still focused on giving back to its community at home here in Lewes.
On Sunday, August 18th they will be hosting their 2nd Annual Shuck Cancer 5k, an event dedicated to rallying support for those bravely battling cancer. Proceeds of the race benefit Fighting Pretty, a non-profit organization that aims to help women battling cancer feel strong and beautiful. I spoke with Kara Frazier, the Founder of Fighting Pretty, about how it all came to be. “The Fighting Pretty movement started with sending strength,” she stated. “Meg O’Hanlon, a breast cancer survivor sent me a pair of mini pink boxing gloves and I used them throughout my fight. I then passed on those gloves to another woman, who passed them on to 5 more people” Kara added. Since its start in 2013, Fighting Pretty has impacted over 35,000 women in all 50 U.S. states and 21 countries globally. Both Kara and Meg will be on-site for the event, cheering on participants and sharing more about Fighting Pretty.
The race kicks off at 8 am from Big Oyster’s location on Kings Highway. You’ll head towards downtown Lewes and the out-and-back course will finish at the brewpub. Feeling competitive? There will be multiple age groups and awards given so bring your speed with you.
Come for the race, stay for the after party. So you just crushed 5,000 meters, or 3.1 miles if you don’t speak metric system, and you feel a little famished. Racers will get a finish line beer and a grab-and-go brunch menu will be offered as well. Big Oyster brewed up the perfect post-race refreshment for the occasion; Shuck Cancer, a 4.5% ABV Mexican Lager with lime. Fighting Pretty will be there talking about their mission, selling merch and swag, and will also have some awesome raffles you won’t want to miss.
Registration for the race is $30 and you can sign up on their website at www.bigoysterbrewery.com. If you can’t make it out this time but would like to learn more about Fighting Pretty, check them out at www.fightingpretty.org where you will see opportunities to get involved, ways to support, and how
to donate.
