Let me tell you something, baby: If drag is a sport, then I just did the queer Olympics in full rhinestones and 90-degree heat. Last weekend was a five-event marathon.
Freddie’s Friday, the Ocean City Pride parade and the Salisbury Pride parade Saturday, then brunch at The Knot and a full-blown, sweat-soaked slay-fest at the Purple Parrot on Sunday. By nightfall, I wasn’t walking – I was floating … on sheer gay willpower and setting spray.
SPOTTED THIS WEEKEND
(I Swear I’m Not Making These Up … Probably)
• A man at the parade wearing SpongeBob pajama pants, a bald eagle temporary tattoo, and crocs with live goldfish in the heels. He tipped me with a ham sandwich and whispered, “For strength.”
• A bachelorette party in full camo holding a sign that said “GIRLS GONE GAY.” One handed me a baby carrot dipped in glitter glue and called it “drag fuel.”
• A boy, no older than seven, stared me dead in the eyes and said, “Your hair is full of secrets.” Then vanished. No parents. No explanation.
• Someone handed me a rock with googly eyes and said, “This is you in mineral form.” It is now my son.
And just when you thought I was gonna rest? No ma’am. July has entered the chat – bringing fireworks, traffic, and tank tops that should’ve stayed in storage.
Queer & Explosive
If you like your fireworks with a side of beach air and boys in short shorts, you’re in luck. Coastal Delaware is lighting up all weekend. For the full rundown flip to page 16 at thecapecurrent.com/issue-archive – and plan ahead. Nothing kills a vibe like getting stuck behind a folding chair brigade.
Speaking of explosions, Freddie’s Beach Bar is leveling up this summer with shows every Friday and Saturday night! More queens, more chaos, more reason to toss a dollar and lose your voice screaming “YASSSSS.” I’ll be popping in regularly – come tip, sip, and tell me all your business.
Because drag isn’t just performance – it’s community. It’s parade days and afterparties. It’s glitter in your bra and bruises on your knees (don’t ask). It’s showing up for each other in blazing sun, pouring rain, and the slightly-sticky air of a crowded dressing room.
So this weekend, as the sky lights up with sparkle and boom, take a moment to celebrate not just independence – but interdependence. The way we lift each other, laugh with each other, and lip-sync through the madness together.
Happy Fourth, and happy freakin’ Pride.
