Craig Bickhardt, Jesse Terry, Sol Knopf and Marissa Levy play Epworth United Methodist Church on Sunday.

Dogs in a Pile and Songwriters in the Round

Mid-July is the time we all decide it’s time to fight traffic … and then promptly decide to stay home. I assure you, this week is worth fighting the turn lane.

JULY 16 – Rocking the Docks returns to the Lewes Ferry Grounds with Dogs in a Pile, a jam band that takes the genre more seriously than the name lets on. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., music starts at 6, kids 12 and under get in free and the sunset is included. If you’d rather stay downtown, Big Boy Brass brings its New Orleans-style horns to the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand at 8 p.m. It’s the kind of set that turns the boardwalk into a block party.

JULY 22 – SummerScape at the Lewes Public Library welcomes Delaware Shakespeare performing Embers of Freedom in the outdoor pavilion at 7 p.m. It’s free, seating is open and picnics are welcome. Bring a blanket and the kids.

JULY 26 – You have two frankly awesome options, but one of them involves watching me play alongside some incredible songwriters.

Option A (loud): Umphrey’s McGee rocks the docks with more than two decades of prog-jam muscle.

Option B (mine): Seaside’s 5th Annual Summer Concert brings four songwriters to one stage at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road in Rehoboth Beach. This is where I’ll be, playing in some very good company.

Craig Bickhardt has written No. 1 hits for Johnny Cash, The Judds and Alison Krauss. Sol Knopf is a Delaware Rock & Roll Society Hall of Famer. Jesse Terry is a Berklee-trained troubadour with fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

And then there’s me … clever lyrics and all.

The concert benefits Seaside Jewish Community. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., music starts at 7. Tickets are $40 for adults, $18 for ages 6 to 18 and free for the little ones.

Marissa’s Picks at The Listening Booth

JULY 17 – Willie Nile | Showtime is 7 p.m. This one is almost sold out.

Willie Nile has been writing sharp, restless rock ‘n’ roll out of New York since the late ’70s. He’s the kind of songwriter other songwriters name-check when they want to sound credible. Bruce Springsteen has pulled him onstage. He plays like the room owes him money and he intends to collect. If you’ve never seen him live, this is the small-room version most people only wish they got.

JULY 22 – Open Mic Night

JULY 23 – Poetry, Spoken Word & Storytelling Open Mic

JULY 25 – David Cook
