The Art of Remembering

Terrance Vann and the Spirit of West Rehoboth

The story of West Rehoboth is one of deep roots, quiet resilience, and a powerful sense of place. In recent years, a local effort has grown to preserve and celebrate the untold Black history of this unique Delaware neighborhood – and it all started with a vision.

That vision turned into action when a group of community leaders, artists, and advocates came together with one shared goal: to tell the story of West Rehoboth in a way that was honest, beautiful, and community-led. At the heart of this project was the decision to work with local artist Terrance Vann, whose own family legacy is deeply rooted in West Rehoboth.

Terrance wasn’t just painting a mural – he was creating a tribute to the people and stories that shaped the neighborhood. With intention, soul, and deep love for his community, Terrance brought history to life on the wall. His mural quickly became a source of pride and visibility for West Rehoboth – a colorful and powerful reminder that this place matters.

But the journey wasn’t without setbacks. Not long after the mural was unveiled, it was accidentally destroyed by a vehicle – a heartbreaking moment for everyone involved. Around the same time, the City of Rehoboth’s 2022 Juneteenth celebration was unexpectedly canceled, leaving the community with a sense of disappointment and loss.

Still, the spirit of West Rehoboth could not be dimmed. The mural was rebuilt and rededicated in 2024, thanks to a continued partnership with West Side New Beginnings, Inc. And something beautiful grew from the challenges: the creation of West Rehoboth’s own Juneteenth celebration – one that centers Black, Brown, and African American voices, businesses, and creative expression.

Now in its second year, the West Rehoboth Juneteenth celebration has become a joyful, unifying event. With music, art, storytelling, and local vendors, it’s a day that brings the community together to honor its past and celebrate its future.

Terrance Vann continues to be a vital part of that story. Through Fresh Art Fridays (hosted by the Developing Artist Collaboration), visitors can connect with his work, hear directly from the Vann family in artist talks and historical presentations, and explore the West Side Creative Market during a special Juneteenth celebration  June 20 (details below).

This is more than a mural or a singular event. It’s a movement – a reminder that when communities tell their stories through art, history, and collective pride, they create something lasting.
