Some truths exist beyond the content of language. Before we adopted words, we lived in a kaleidoscope of color, shape, and sound. Our perception anchored us in a space of constant flux. That’s the realm Lisa Westbrook inhabits, and it’s where her upcoming solo exhibition Shifting Atmospheres invites us to go.
Lisa is a spiritually driven abstract artist whose work flows from deep wells of prayer, emotion, and lived transformation. Her creative journey has taken many forms – pastor, body healer, workshop facilitator – but it’s through the language of color and shape that she now expresses what words cannot.
“My paintings are visual meditations,” Lisa shares. “They come from prayer and personal experience, but they’re made to be shared. Each piece is an invitation.”
This exhibition explores cycles of redemption, joy, struggle, and release – echoing how emotional weather patterns pass through us, shift, and clear. The abstract format allows for openness, evoking what Lisa calls the “ineffable currents of spirit” – those intangible but deeply felt experiences that bind us to one another and to something greater.
While Lisa’s work is spiritually grounded, her instinct to use color and abstraction as tools for emotional movement is also backed by research. Studies show that abstract art can influence brainwave patterns, offering a kind of psychological reset. Unlike representational images that cue memory or narrative, abstract compositions open viewers to personal interpretation, often triggering introspection and free association.
Her use of layered color, sweeping gestures, and meditative marks allows for something else to enter: breath, light, presence.
Shifting Atmospheres is more than an art show – it’s an open door. The installation is intentionally designed for community engagement. Viewers are encouraged to move slowly, reflect deeply, and allow themselves to fully experience the work.
In a time when many are searching for inner peace, creative inspiration, or simply a place to pause, Lisa’s work offers an unspoken affirmation: you are not alone, and beauty still has the power to move you.
Join us Friday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Artpothecary in West Rehoboth. Meet the artist, experience art with intent, and let something shift.
