August is almost here, and summer is nowhere close to done. Here’s a week of music, from big stages to backyard breweries, with a few quirky detours worth taking.
AUG 2 – John Mulaney brings his sharp, faintly anxious brilliance to Freeman Arts Pavilion, 8 p.m. Proof that a great night out doesn’t always need a guitar, though we have plenty of those too … keep reading.
AUG 3 – The Listening Booth itself hits the road for a Listening Booth Takeover at the West Side Creative Market in Rehoboth, 5 to 9 p.m.
AUG 4 – A hard choice, and you can’t lose either way. Gin Blossoms and Spin Doctors bring my nineties dreams to Freeman Arts Pavilion, 7 p.m., with all the choruses you burned forever into your Gen X/Millennial brain. Or you can head to the water, where Rocking the Docks hosts Oakland retro-soul outfit The California Honeydrops, a band that plays with no set list and never the same show twice. Lewes Ferry Grounds, doors at 5:30 p.m., music at 6 p.m., kids 12 and under free.
AUG 5 – SummerScape at the Lewes Public Library hosts America Sings Broadway, a singers and songwriters night in the outdoor pavilion, 7 p.m. Free, and picnics are welcome.
AUG 6 – The Quirk Meets Culture Award goes to Pop Up Opera at Lewes Canalfront Park, 6:30 p.m. Actual opera, outdoors, free. Bring a chair and let your date think you’re a discerning sophisticate!
Dogfish Head in Milton opens the weekend with Little Hustle on Friday, Crooked Hammock Brewery runs music all weekend, and Salted Vines and Twin Branch wineries handle the lazy afternoons.

AUG 2 – Jacob Furr with Terry & Tilly
Jacob Furr is a Fort Worth songwriter who writes like the West Texas highway looks: wide, weathered and honest about the distance. After losing his wife in 2013, he pointed the car west and turned the grief into a three-album run that keeps earning him best songwriter awards back home in Texas. His songs sit somewhere between the dust of where he started and the coast he drove toward, and they land hardest in a small, quiet room like this one. Local favorites Terry & Tilly open. 7 p.m.
