Freddy Jones Band rocks the Booth this weekend.

Roots, Rock, Games and a 250th Salute

This week trades fireworks for something quieter and, in a couple of cases, nerdier. I am 100% on board.

JULY 9 – Little Big Town brings four-part harmony and two decades of radio staples to Freeman Arts Pavilion in Selbyville, part of the pavilion’s new permanent-stage season. “Boondocks,” “Girl Crush” and a catalog built for a warm night under the trees. Bring a blanket and a low chair.

JULY 12 – The Southern Delaware Orchestra salutes the state’s 250th with American Spirit, Coastal Soul at 3 p.m. at Cape Henlopen High School, pairing American classics with brand-new works by Delaware composers. A local orchestra premiering local music in a year built for exactly that. Tickets at sodelomusic.org.

JULY 13 – Millennial Game Night takes over the Lewes Public Library at 6:30 p.m., which is exactly the kind of low-stakes, high-snack social event this particular generation was owed. Board games, fellow elder millennials and not an algorithm in sight. Bring your competitive streak.

JULY 15 – Delaware Shakespeare stages Embers of Freedom in the library’s outdoor pavilion at 7 p.m. as part of the SummerScape series. The performance is free to all. A timely bit of theater in a year the whole country is thinking hard about its founding. Bring a chair and a little patience for iambic pentameter.

Marissa’s Picks at The Listening Booth

JULY 12 – Freddy Jones Band

Freddy Jones Band came out of Chicago’s early-’90s scene with a warm, melodic roots-rock sound that never once chased the grunge everyone around them was chasing, and “In a Daydream” has been quietly lodged in the back of a generation’s memory ever since.

Fronted by Marty Lloyd, the band trades in the kind of grooving, jam-friendly Americana that earned comparisons to the Allman Brothers and Blues Traveler along with a permanent spot on Chicago radio. Thirty-plus years and a stack of albums later, they still play like the road is the whole point. For a Sunday evening at the Booth, this is a rare get. 6 p.m.

JULY 10 – Claudia Hoyser, 3 p.m.

JULY 10 – Rave Party hosted by 420R.AVE (18+)

JULY 11 – Honey Badgers & Haunted Like Human

JULY 17 – Willie Nile

JULY 25 – David Cook
