Since its opening in 2022, Lewes Oyster House has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. And they recently made the wine-wise decision to bring on a true sommelier, Diego Lascano. While their wine list has always been impressive, Diego’s knowledge and passion for wine is already evident. By way of example, while the wine list includes a nice selection of well-known varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Pinot Noir, it is refreshing to see an emphasis on artisanal or otherwise lesser-known producers.
What also stands out is the array of carefully chosen, interesting, and not so common wines. So, while the wine list at Lewes Oyster House is fairly modest in its number of selections (about 60 different wines are offered), it really wows its guests with wines from all over the globe that you don’t often see on a wine list in this area. Malvasia and Assyrtiko from Greece, a Roussanne from California, a Sancerre Rouge from France, a Pinot Noir/Zweigelt blend from Austria, etc., are among the offerings. And the by-the-glass list is equally broad in scope. I also love that the wine list includes great wines at all price points, so whatever your budget, you will be able to enjoy an
interesting wine.
You can also see the Sommelier touch at Lewes Oyster House in how well the wine list pairs with its food offerings. It is apparent that much thought has gone into matching not only oysters and other seafood with wines from such seafood centric countries as Greece, but the list also includes a good number of red wines that will pair well with menu items such as hanger steak and lamb kabobs, or for those like me that often drink red wine with certain seafood.
I asked Diego why he is so focused on offering such a variety of interesting and somewhat unusual wines. “I really wanted to introduce new wine regions and new varietals to both visitors and locals alike,” he said, noting that his Chardonnay from Slovenia has been a big hit with guests. “If a guest walks away having really enjoyed something new, that makes my day,” he continued.
Diego has his wine sights set high at Lewes Oyster House, and I am looking forward to seeing the fall seasonal wine selections he has in store for us. I expect the wine list to continue to receive the high praise and recognition it deserves.
