When we’re looking for a fun-for-everyone, good-for-any-kind-of-weather activity, a favorite go-to is thrift-store shopping. It’s easy, inexpensive, doesn’t require reservations, and even has free parking.
We are lucky to have a six-pack of great thrift stores within a few miles of each other along Coastal Highway. You can find great deals, and the money generally goes to a good cause.
If you’re the practical sort, look for games and toys, stuff you forgot to pack, extra sheets and towels, and the sweaters or hoodies you didn’t think you’d need. But why not add the spirit of competition by holding a Thrift Store Challenge?
Set a time limit and a dollar maximum. Decide whether to limit it to one store or leave it open. Determine your category (funniest outfit, largest haul, quirkiest find, highest retail value). Go out individually or work in teams. A fun challenge for couples is for each person to create an outfit for the other. Older kids generally prefer to take the cash and go on a spree on their own.
At the chosen time, meet up and compare your loot. For extra fun, ahead of time scout out a “trophy” to award the winner. After you’re finished, keep what you want and donate the rest back.
