Unearth Coastal Delaware’s Colorful Past
We love our history here. From pirates to prohibitionists, storms to shipwrecks, and even a fountain of youth – a lot has happened around here. Many remnants of that history still exist. You may have driven by some of these historical treasures without knowing the secrets they contain or the tales they could tell. But you can find out what’s hiding in plain sight through one of the many walking tours.
Lewes Historical Society
The Lewes Historical Society offers multiple walking tours to choose from. Start with the History Highlights Walking Tour (60 minutes / $10) to get an overview of Lewes’s rich 300-year history. Then move on to a special interest tour: Shipwrecks & Rescues, Historic Houses, Legacy of the African American Community, Revolutionary Lewes, Lewes Legends (an evening tour featuring strange happenings and tall tales), or Haunting History. Tour lengths, costs, and walking distances vary. Check the website for details and available dates.
Rehoboth Beach Museum
The Rehoboth Beach Museum is offering two guided tours this summer. Both last 90 minutes, cost $10, and include a parking pass.
- The Annual Boardwalk Walking Tour is a gentle stroll through Rehoboth that covers shipwrecks, storms, fires, WWII, and more.
- The Spunky Women Walking Tour highlights the women of Rehoboth who made the town a “more pleasant place.” It includes suffragettes, restaurateurs, philanthropists, and even the Mosquito Matron.
So grab a water bottle, put on some comfortable shoes, and get walking (just don’t forget to make a reservation first)!
