Snackle Up: Picnic Like a Pro

If your memories of eating on the beach are limited to the unmistakable and unappetizing grit of a SANDwich, I have good news! Beach picnics have improved, and you have plenty of options.

For starters, some companies offer fully catered beach picnics, whether you envision a bonfire, a clambake, or a full upscale dinner. Prefer the grab-and-go approach? Pick up a bucket of chicken, a charcuterie board, or a bag of DQ dogs and burgers. If that’s not your style, go DIY with a build-your-own beach picnic.

The best DIY picnics are simple: well-wrapped packages that keep the sand out, containers of spreads or salads, and easy-to-eat foods like kabobs and cut fruit. Be sure to keep things cold (or hot) until serving.

My favorite serving vehicle is the snacklebox. Take a clean plastic container with compartments – people have used tackle boxes or craft organizers, but you can now find food-safe versions made just for this. Fill each compartment with a different treat: pepperoni or other smoked meat, cheese cubes, crackers, fruit, cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, nuts, olives, hummus, guacamole, candies, cookies, and more. Make separate boxes for savory, sweet, adult, or child, or customize one for each person. Kids especially love making their own snackleboxes.

Don’t forget: It’s a beach picnic, so take a blanket, insect repellent, sunscreen, paper towels, a jar of slightly soapy water (you’ll thank me later), garbage bags, and beverages. Juice boxes and bottled water work well.

Beach picnics make great memories – take lots of pictures!
