Green’s Ice Cream, owned by local teenager Jordan Green, is revving up for its second summer, bringing ice cream to a sandbar near you.
Green is 17 years old and a junior at Sussex Academy. Last year, at just 16, he started his entrepreneurial journey selling ice cream on the back bays.
“I fuel up at Paradise Grill. Depending on the tide, I start around 11 to 11:30 a.m. and stay out until things slow down,” he said.
You can find him every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as holidays, during the summer months cruising the sandbars and beaches along the Indian River.
Green said his parents are entrepreneurs, and when he told his dad he wanted to make his own money, they got to work.
“My dad and I stripped our old pontoon boat and got it ready,” he said, turning it into a floating shop.
Green got his boating license and, voila – Green’s Ice Cream.
Because honestly, who doesn’t love an ice cream man … on a boat?
Green also sells water, soda, bagged ice, chips and snacks. This summer, customers can expect an even larger variety of ice cream.
“I look for what kids enjoy,” he said, noting he keeps stock of fan favorites. “Ice cream sandwiches, Oreo, Reese’s, KitKat, Rocket Pops … all the good stuff,” he said with a smile.
Green accepts cash and Venmo.
“We tried credit cards last summer, but it’s slow in the middle of the bay … we’re working on it, though,” he said with a laugh.
While he still has another year of high school ahead of him, Green admits the experience has changed his plans for the future.
“It’s taught me boating, water safety and business,” he said. “I’m really enjoying running this, and I definitely want to go into business in the future.”
