Whether you’re in the throes of romance or just need a moment, pausing to appreciate the end (or beginning) of a day is a wonderful beach experience.
We must, however, start with a brief science lesson: The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. We are on the East Coast, so our beaches generally face east, which means if you are at one of our many coastal beaches, you will easily be able to see a sunrise if you get up early enough.
If it’s a sunset you’re after, you must find a good location that faces west. Luckily enough, we have many bodies of water here, so it’s not too tough to find one that provides a good spot for a beachy sunset. Whether you’re snapping a photo or just soaking in the view, these are some of our favorite places to watch the day wind down:
CAPE REGION SUNSET CHECKLIST
Lewes Canal – Multiple views, including from the Lewes Canal Bridge and Irish Eyes
Cape Henlopen State Park – Try The Point (where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean), the fishing pier, or any spot with a view of the Delaware Breakwater East End Lighthouse
Roosevelt Inlet – Near the Lewes Yacht Club
Rehoboth Bay (south of Dewey Beach) – Great spots include Tower Road, New Road (bay side), and the Rusty Rudder restaurant
Big Chill Beach Club – Overlooking Indian River Inlet. The nearby Indian River Bridge (officially the Charles W. Cullen Bridge) also makes a great sunset photo backdrop
