Film Launches Cape Region as a Movie Location

Matthew McConaughey, Justin Bartha and Bradley Cooper were hanging out on surfboards, talking about women and waiting for a wave in the waters off Cape Henlopen State Park on Aug. 3. While they appeared to be waiting for a wave, their surfboards were anchored as Tom Dey directed a scene for his new film, “Failure to Launch.” The film also stars Sarah Jessica Parker, but she was not in town.

Film crew members said they enjoyed working and staying in Lewes for a couple of days. “It’s a beautiful place. Too bad we’re not going to be here longer,” said transport captain Marty Wells.

Cape Henlopen State Park was chosen for the beauty of the location and for ease of logistics, said crewmember Jay Kleinhesselink. Once here, the crew also noticed another benefit to working in Lewes. “It’s great working here because everyone knows each other and that makes legwork so much easier,” said location manager Ian MacGregor.

“It benefits the park, the state and Lewes because it’s a way to showcase the area, and it contributes to the economy,” said Park Administrator Pat Cooper, who hopes more movies will be filmed in the area.
