Pedal Pushers’ Paradise

Wheel Your Way Through the Beaches’ Best Bike Trails.

As anyone who lives or vacations in lower Delaware can attest, biking is a popular activity, both for recreation and basic transportation. Below we’ve outlined some of the more renowned bike trails that seasoned and occasional cyclists alike can enjoy.

Cape Henlopen State Park

Did you know that Cape Henlopen State Park has multiple biking trails to explore? Choose your route based on your desired level of difficulty, length, and sightseeing options.

Park (Bike) Loop: A 3.3-mile paved trail, suitable for cyclists of all skill levels. Enjoy a beautiful ocean view at the overlook in front of the Fort Miles Battery 519 Museum!

Walking Dunes Trail: A 2.6-mile trail with serene vibes. Take a break at one of the boardwalks to check out the scenic marsh.

Gordons Pond Trail: This beloved 3.2-mile trail features stunning views of the dunes, marshes, and pond. You can even spot birds in the pond during the summertime.

Junction & Breakwater Trail: A 5.8-mile stone dust and paved trail that takes you along the old Junction & Breakwater Railroad. Looking to avoid chaotic summer traffic? This trail has a convenient alternate route that avoids route 1!

Regional (Grand) Loop: If you’re up for a major adventure, this 16-mile trail is for you. Once you reach Freeman Highway, you have the option to hit the Junction & Breakwater trail or continue toward Savannah Road.

Georgetown-Lewes Trail

This 17-mile paved bike trail is a must-try! While it may be on the longer side, the flat paved ground keeps things simple and stress-free. If you’re starting out in Lewes, kick off your ride near Old World Breads Bakery or by the Lewes Public Library. Once you’re all biked out, you can take a leisurely walk on the beach or through downtown Lewes.

Seashore Bike Route

Starting at Fenwick Island State Park and ending at Delaware Seashore State Park, this popular route is around 11 miles long. Primarily taking place along the narrow side of route 1, you’ll either be on the ocean or bay side depending on your direction. Keep in mind that an entrance fee is required for parking.

Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk

For a more low-key ride with an extra beachy ambiance, take your wheels to the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk. To get there, all you have to do is take Rehoboth Avenue toward the coast and you can’t miss it. Riding on the boardwalk is only permitted from 5 am to 10 am during the summer, so make sure you’re following those rules. It’s also important to yield to pedestrians, stay in a single file formation, use an appropriate signal when approaching others, and watch your speed. Happy riding!
