Want to beat the crowds? Avoid lines? Get a parking spot? Visit the beach at night!
Check to make sure the beach is open (some have closing hours). Take a flashlight, shoes that can get wet, a container for beachcombing, insect repellent, and a blanket.
Here are things to look for:
GHOST CRABS
Watch for tiny crabs emerging from the sand and scurrying around to find food. They are fun to observe, but please don’t disturb them or their burrows.
BEACHCOMBING TREASURES
With fewer people on the beach, your chances are much better for finding interesting shells, stones, or even shipwreck artifacts (especially at Roosevelt Inlet).
BIOLUMINESCENCE
On a dark night, look for a blue glow on the waves or at the water’s edge. Some jellyfish light up at night, and there are also tiny marine organisms that emit light when disturbed. Your best chance to see bioluminescence is by wading in a shallow bay and swirling the water.
STARS
The darker the sky, the easier it is to see planets, stars, and other astronomical features, especially when looking away from city lights. Gazing out over the beach at night provides just that opportunity. You may even catch the Northern Lights on occasion (best seen by taking a photo using night mode).
MOMENT OF ZEN
Arrange your blanket on the sand, lie on your back, and take a moment. Gaze at the stars or simply close your eyes and listen – to the waves and the night sounds. Reflect on how lucky we are to be able to experience the Delaware coast.
