Hit the Trail

Bring a bike, rent a bike, or just start walking. We have great recreational trails. The two main coastal ones are the Junction & Breakwater Trail and the Georgetown–Lewes Trail. If you park in the lot by the Lewes Public Library, you can get right on the Georgetown–Lewes Trail or walk across Freeman Highway to pick up the Junction & Breakwater Trail.

Don’t have a bike? Seagreen Bicycle Rentals is conveniently located near the Freeman Highway crosswalk. They rent bikes of all sorts (including electric) and the rentals include helmets, locks, and trail maps.

The 7-mile Junction & Breakwater Trail connects Lewes and Rehoboth Beach, meandering through forests, fields, and marshes. Interpretive signs provide opportunities to learn about local history, plants, and wildlife. The 17-mile Georgetown–Lewes Trail takes you by a variety of sights, including my favorite, “The Yard on the Trail” (Google it).

KNOW YOUR TRAIL ETIQUETTE

  • On a bike? Wear a helmet! Nothing puts a damper on a vacation like a serious head injury.
  • Bikers, announce yourselves when approaching walkers: “On your left – two bikes!”
  • Walkers, stay to the right and acknowledge you’ve heard by raising your hand.
  • Dogs are allowed, but keep them on a short leash.
  • Everyone is welcome on the trail, from folks in wheelchairs to pro bikers. Please be respectful and patient.
  • Keep your speed down! This is a recreational trail, not the Tour de France.
  • Those stop signs are for you. The trails cross active roads. Don’t let “but I had the right of way” be your last words.
