What a 5K Does to Your Body

(and Why It’s Worth It)

Mile 1–2

System Check

What’s happening:
Your aerobic system takes over – using oxygen to burn fuel more efficiently.
Blood vessels expand, muscles warm up, you hit your stride.

Fun fact:
You’re now a full-blown oxygen delivery system on legs. You’re basically a UPS truck for O₂.

Mile 2–3

The Negotiation Phase

What’s happening:
Lactic acid builds up = legs feel heavy.
Heart and lungs are working at max output.
Your brain starts asking, “Do we have to finish this?”

Fun fact:
Lactic acid isn’t the enemy – it actually helps fuel muscles. The “burn” comes when production is greater than clearance.

Final 0.1

The Drama Segment

What’s happening:
Your body is screaming but your ego says, “We’re finishing this thing.”
Adrenaline gives one last kick.
Tunnel vision. Maybe some dry heaving. But also … glory.

Fun fact:
Your body can technically keep going – but your brain pulls the plug first. Fatigue is part physical, part mental.

Afterward

Welcome to Recovery Town

What’s happening:
Heart rate slows. Endorphins spike. Muscles rebuild.
You’re suddenly obsessed with breakfast foods.
You might say, “That was fun, let’s do it again,” while limping.

Fun fact:
With regular training, your body gets more efficient – lower resting heart rate, faster recovery, and stronger lungs.
