Seas The Day

End-of-Summer Survival Guide

Halloween décor may have taken over the stores, but if you’re still craving warm summer nights and salty breezes, a trip to the beach is the perfect antidote to back-to-school fever and pumpkin spice overload.

Here are some tips for enjoying the beach this Labor Day weekend and beyond:

  • Monitor beach flags and surf conditions.
We’re entering the peak of hurricane season. Even offshore storms can stir up dangerous currents and waves.
  • Never swim solo.
Many Delaware beaches are unguarded after Labor Day or have only limited weekend coverage. Always swim near a lifeguard or bring a buddy to watch you if no lifeguards are present.
  • Break the grip of the rip.
If you’re caught in a rip current, don’t fight it. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re free, and wave for assistance if needed.
  • Don’t turn your back to the waves.
Larger waves can appear without warning and knock you down. Exit the ocean between sets.
  • Summer bucket list.
Remember that kayak you splurged on? Take it out for a paddle on the canal. Afterwards, tour a lifesaving station, catch an outdoor concert, or learn to crab like a local.
  • Beat the heat.
The sun’s UV rays are still strong, even on cloudy days. Reapply sunscreen every two hours and stay hydrated (water is best, though we admit an orange crush is pretty refreshing).

Fight the end-of-summer blues.
While the traditional summer season may be winding down, September brings its own rewards: uncrowded beaches, off-season restaurant specials, and sidewalk sales.
