Well, well, well … we blinked, and June was over. The Fourth of July is upon us – the pinnacle of summer. There’s just something about the holiday that pairs perfectly with a pint.
You may recall that last year, we checked in with our local brewing community to see what they’re drinking to celebrate. We’re following that up with a fresh new list from some of your favorite brewers in the 302. Let’s dive in …
JUSTIN LEAHY
Head Brewer, Thompson Island Brewing Company
“In years past, my go-to beers for the Fourth of July were 21st Amendment’s Hell or High Watermelon, Oskar Blues Dale’s Pale Ale, and any of the beer we made at Peace Tree Brewing back in Iowa.
Now that I’m at Thompson Island, the annual releases of our Summer Pilsner and 1776 Hazy IPA are the beers I stock up on for the holiday. As far as traditions go, whenever “Independence Day” airs, I surely stop and watch. Jeff Goldblum is a national treasure!”
KELLY RICHTER
Brewer, Dewey Beer Company
“On the Fourth, I’ll typically rotate between Taco Dealer, our Mexican lager, and Swishy Pants, our core hazy IPA. Maybe throw in a few Twisted Teas to mix it up. I usually go home to Scranton and attend Fourth of July parties with family and friends … and swim in the pool!”
LARRY HORWITZ
Director of Brewing Operations, Crooked Hammock Brewery
“My favorite for the Fourth of July is our Beach Escape. It’s an easy-drinking, sessionable IPA at only 4.5% ABV, making it great to enjoy throughout the day.
This year, I’m also going to be drinking our new Rocket Pop Hard Seltzer, making its debut for the Fourth. It’s bursting with those flavors you know and love: cherry, lime, and blue raspberry.
Our annual tradition is to head down to Lewes for the boat parade and stay for the fireworks – the best place to catch Fourth of July vibes.”
DAVE JONES
Brewmaster, Lewes Brewing Company
“My go-to is Lewes Brewing Company’s Sun N Sand, a Helles lager. It’s a perfect summer beer. Traditionally, I grab a bushel of crabs and fresh corn, invite friends and family over, and enjoy the day.”
MICKEY DIEFENDERFER
Head Brewer, Revelation Craft Brewing Company
“The Fourth of July calls for a couple of crispy boys. For me, that means Montucky Cold Snacks. They’re finally distributed in Delaware again, so I’ll have a few of those in the cooler.
At Rev, I’ve been going with Worth the Wait, our hazy IPA brewed with Nelson, Mosaic, and Citra hops. For the holiday, I typically hang with friends and family before the fireworks.”
There you have it, folks. This group spends a lot of time in and around beer, so it’s safe to say they’re a credible source. As you make your beer run leading up to the holiday, consider some of these recommendations. Cheers to summer!
