Johnny Davidson is the assistant general manager at Lighthouse and Lighthouse Cove – one of Dewey Beach’s most iconic bayside restaurants and one of the few that’s dog-friendly, with outdoor decks and even a famous “Doggy Menu.”
“Woodford’s ‘Reserve’ is our most popular pick – it has grilled salmon with broccoli and rice! Dogs are like kids these days, so they have to eat well too,” he laughs.
In addition to great food, dogs, and a perfect sunset view, Lighthouse also features a popular beach volleyball court. “I wanted to use our volleyball area and thought of ‘Dodging for Dogs,’” Davidson said. “I have lots of silly ideas, but they’re all worth a try. I’m lucky to have the support of my team to bring this together.”
His “silly” idea turned into a highly successful annual event now in its second year: a charity dodgeball tournament, with all proceeds benefiting local pups through a partnership with Delaware’s own Grass Roots Rescue. “At the event, we have dogs on site for adoption,” he said.
All competing teams are made up of restaurant industry workers from spots as far north as Milford and as far south as Ocean City, Md. “We do this the Monday after Memorial Day. It creates a sense of community with the players – it’s really cool to network and blow off some steam for a great cause.”
Tito’s Vodka sponsors the event. “For every Tito’s drink we sell, they donate $1 to Grass Roots Rescue,” Davidson said.
So mark your calendar for next year’s second most popular Monday of summer – the Monday after Memorial Day – and in the meantime, bring your dogs down to enjoy their own version of a kids’ menu. Four-legged babies welcome.
