Heading south on Route 1, you’ll notice a new and welcome sight just past the Safeway in Rehoboth Beach. First State Brewing Company opened in the shopping center at the end of March, just in time for the summer season. Formerly home to The Pond – or TGI Friday’s, if you want to take it way back – First State is settling into its second location.
As a Lewes native and Cape Henlopen alum, founder and CEO Paul Hester was stoked to expand into Sussex County. “Having grown up at the beach, it feels like a full circle kind of moment,” Hester says. “I’m excited to get back to my roots and be part of this great community once again, especially the awesome local brewery scene,” he adds.
The space is unrecognizable from how its predecessors left it. Bright, inviting murals adorn the walls of the new open floor plan, thanks to Marshall Adams, a renowned muralist from Baltimore. A sprawling bar is backed by 24 taps and an extensive draft list that beer novices and aficionados alike can appreciate. This location is also home to First State’s barrel aging and blending operations, allowing them to put out some fun and unique products throughout the year.
It wouldn’t be Brewsworthy without some recommendations. First State was voted the best new brewery in the United States by USA Today in 2023. Needless to say, finding a good beer is pretty easy. As a self-described lager lad, my go-tos are Triangle Theory – their crispy, clean, crushable core lager – and Lost Ubiquity, a New Zealand-style pilsner. In the IPA department, First State really knows its way around a hazy, so you can’t go wrong with something from the limited release list. Black Lotus, a 7% ABV coffee stout, is always a good choice as well. First State also offers a first-rate cocktail program, if that’s more your speed.
If you’ve visited First State’s original location in Middletown, you know that the food is equally impressive as the beer. The Rehoboth location is no different. The kitchen is cranking out elevated eats and specials you wouldn’t expect from your typical brewpub experience. Think dishes like diavolo mussels, blackened swordfish, wild game sausage, and short rib poutine. Of course, their burgers and wings do not disappoint either.
All this beer and food talk calls for a celebration of both. On Monday, June 16, First State is hosting a chef- and brewer-curated food and beer experience. This collaborative beer dinner features some fun courses courtesy of my friend and fellow writer here at The Cape Current, chef Hari Cameron. Beer-braised pork shoulder and baked local oysters are just a few of the highlights. More information and the full menu can be found at First State’s website. Grab your tickets before they’re gone!
