I have reached a point in my life where I need to stop pretending “Mean Girls” is just my favorite movie.
It’s not. It’s a recurring expense.
Every Oct. 3, my social media becomes a shrine to Cady Heron. Every Wednesday, I somehow find something pink to wear. I have “SO FETCH” tattooed on my finger, which is a sentence that sounds completely normal to me and absolutely insane to everyone else.
I regret nothing.
Some people collect baseball cards. I collect “Mean Girls” moments.
One of my favorites happened years after the movie came out. I met Daniel Franzese, who played Damian. Then I met him again. And again. Somewhere along the way, we became friends, and now Damian is a Kadet Kelly fan. If you’d told teenage me that one day I’d be texting Damian from “Mean Girls” while gluing rhinestones to a drag outfit, I would’ve assumed you’d accidentally inhaled too much hairspray.
So you can imagine my reaction when I saw “Mean Girls: The Musical” was playing at Clear Space Theatre in Rehoboth Beach.
There was no, “Maybe I’ll go.”
There was only, “When am I going?”
That’s one of the reasons I love Rehoboth. The town has this sneaky way of surprising you. You head down for the beach, convince yourself you’re only getting one order of fries, spend too much money shopping and then realize one of Broadway’s biggest musicals is playing a block from the boardwalk.
Clear Space Theatre has become one of those places that quietly keeps delivering. This summer, it’s bringing “Mean Girls” to the stage through Aug. 29, and I honestly can’t think of a better excuse to plan one more beach day before summer disappears. Spend the afternoon in the sand, grab dinner downtown, then end the night watching Regina George terrorize North Shore High … with choreography. I’m in.
At this point, I don’t need another reason to love “Mean Girls.”
But putting it on stage in Rehoboth?
That’s almost as perfect as butter being a carb. Almost.
I’ll see you Out & About. Bring cheese fries.
